Almost every small business owner I work with asks me the same question in the first five minutes of our first call: ChatGPT or Claude?

Short answer: probably both. But if you can only pick one to start with, the right answer depends on what you do.

Long, accurate documents

Contracts. Discovery files. Long client memos. SOPs. Claude handles long context better than ChatGPT, hallucinates less, and produces output that needs less editing.

Writing that sounds like a human

Most of my clients agree: Claude's writing sounds less like AI. It is harder to spot. For client-facing communication where AI tone would be a liability, Claude is the safer pick.

Document review and analysis

Send Claude a 50-page document and ask for a summary. It actually reads it. It actually summarizes it. It does not invent things. For law firms, accountants, financial advisors, and any document-heavy practice, this is the killer feature.

Privacy posture (with the right plan)

Both companies offer enterprise plans with strong privacy. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has historically led on safety and is often the easier sell to legal and compliance teams.

Real estate agents

What about the free tiers?

Both ChatGPT and Claude have free tiers. Both are useful. Both are insufficient for serious business use because of lower context limits, older models, slower output, more limits per day, and weaker privacy posture.

If you are a sole proprietor experimenting, free is fine. The minute your business depends on the tool, get the paid version. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both $20 a month. That is the cheapest software your business will ever buy.
